August 17, 2005

The White Coat Ceremony is a recently added tradition to the education of pharmacists, similar to the christening of a ship before its maiden voyage. On August 17, 2005, the Inaugural Class of the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy was launched into its three-year academic endeavor. The Ceremony began with a brief welcome from Dr. Edgar Gonzalez, Dean of the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy, and an invocation by Pastor Neely from New Hope Church. Our students were reminded about the responsibilities, hard work, and opportunities that lie ahead during motivational speeches delivered by Joe Fink, R.Ph., J.D., Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Kentucky; Ms. Becky Snead, R.Ph., Executive Vice President for the Virginia Pharmacists Association; and keynote speaker Dr. Gene White, Emeritus Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Lastly, our students were individually called to receive their white laboratory coats in the presence of their families and friends. Drs. Susan Mayhew and Lanny Foss presented the students with their coats as Ms. Vickie Keene called out the roster for the Class of 2008.
The Ceremony, held at Riverview Elementary School in Grundy, marked the official start of classes at the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy in front of an audience of over 150 people, including local dignitaries such as the Honorable Mr. Roger Powers, Mayor of Grundy.
