Remote Area Medical (RAM): July 25-27, 2008

The Wise Remote Area Medical health fair will be held July 25-27, 2008 at the Wise County Fairgrounds.  We anticipate that there will be approximately 3,000 people in need of services who will attend.

Persons who wish to volunteer must register in advance and send registration forms to Wendy Wampler at the address on the form.  All licensed health professionals must apply no later than June 15, 2008 and the application must be accompanied by a copy of your current license.

Remote Area Medical (RAM) Volunteer Corps exists to provide free health care, dental care, and eye care to residents of rural and remote locations in the U.S. and throughout the world.

Tips for RAM Volunteers

  • When arriving at the RAM site, parking staff will direct you to the Volunteer Parking area.  Proceed to the “Volunteer” registration to check in.  We plan to use a bar coding system to track Volunteer hours so it is very important that you register before going “on duty”. Also, be sure to check out at the end of each day.
  • You will need to bring proof of your professional licensure (M.D., D.O., DDS, R.N., N.P., P.A. etc.) if applicable(This should not apply if you have already pre-registered with us.)
  • Bring your own diagnostic equipment (otoscope/opthalmoscope, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, etc.). There will only be a limited number and kinds of diagnostic equipment so don’t count on your favorite instrument being available. Basic things like gloves and lubricant will be available.
  • Wear your institutional I.D. badge.
  • Food and cool drinks will be provided for all volunteers.
  • Prepare for all kinds of weather: It may be cold in the early AM (jacket or sweater) and at that time of year, it will be HOT by afternoon. Although there is cover, rain is always a possibility so you might need rainwear to go back and forth between buildings, mobile units, etc.
  • Bring some kind of bug deterrent.

*If you are helping with pre- and post- RAM set-up, clean-up, etc., please turn in those hours at the Volunteer Registration table at some point during the actual event or send them to Wendy Wampler, Frontier Health, 2532 4th Avenue East, Big Stone Gap, VA  24219 (FAX # 276-523-2527) immediately following the event.  You can pick up a form to record those hours at the Volunteer Registration table during RAM.
