Dave Shanahan

David Shanahan is a native of Tazewell County, Virginia, and a graduate of Pocahontas High School. He graduated from Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia in 1966, with an Associate of Science degree. He then attended the Medical College of Virginia from 1966-69, completing a BS in Pharmacy. While at the Medical College, David belonged to Phi Delta Chi, a professional pharmacy fraternity, and to the student pharmaceutical association SAPhA.

After graduating, he worked in several pharmacies in Southwest Virginia, including Food City of Marion, and pharmacies in Bluefield, Oakwood, Hurley, and Grundy. He has also operated several pharmacies, and currently works at pharmacies in Iaeger and Princeton, West Virginia, and at the Medical Park Pharmacy in Grundy, Virginia.

David has been a pioneer for computerization in pharmacies since the late 1970s, installing one of the first computerized systems in the region in 1978. He spoke to pharmacists in West Virginia in the early 1980s about computerization, advocating for the use of computers outside of large hospital pharmacies. He is still pioneering new technology, with ScriptPro Pharmacy Robotic dispensing devices installed at Four Seasons Pharmacy in Princeton, West Virginia, and at Medical Park Pharmacy in Grundy, Virginia. The nearest other pharmacy with this technology is in Charleston, West Virginia.

In addition to serving as a Trustee for the University of Appalachia, David is a member of the Sandy Valley Lodge Masonic Lodge #17 A.F. & A.M., and the Kazim Shriners. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the Stone Mountain Health Council.

David is married to Marian Shanahan, also a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. She worked for many years as a public health nurse in Buchanan County. She occasionally assists University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy students by serving as a practice patient.
