Dr. Donna M. Adkins is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice for the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy. Dr. Adkins is a native of the region. She lived in Buchanan County until the age of 14, and then moved to Dickenson County. She currently resides in Clintwood.
Dr. Adkins earned both a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. She has held a certificate as a Certified Disease State Manager in Diabetes since 1999.
She served as a staff pharmacist at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, VA, until 1995, when she accepted a staff position at Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) Hospital in Wise, VA. She then transferred to the ARH Hospital in Whitesburg, KY, where she was promoted to Director of Pharmacy for the hospital. While with Appalachian Regional Healthcare System she helped form the Patient Medication Education Program, which educated patients about their medications during their hospital stay and at discharge, played a key role in the development of a drug abuse awareness program which helped train managers to recognize the signs of drug abuse in employees, and was actively involved in poison prevention programs for school age children and the elderly. In 2001 she took the Director of Pharmacy Services position at Dickenson County Medical Center in Clintwood, VA.
Dr. Adkins currently is employed by Pharmerica, Inc. as a Long Term Care Consultant Pharmacist.
Dr. Adkins is a devoted genealogist and has traced the history of several families from the Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, and Southern West Virginia areas.
