Dr. David Gettman is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Administration at the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Montana, an M.B.A. from the College of William and Mary, and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Dr. Gettman has practiced pharmacy for over twenty years in numerous settings: retail, hospital, nursing home, hospice, and in the military.
He is a veteran of two wars. He was a naval hospital corpsman stationed with the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, and he was an Air Force pharmacist in support of the Desert Shield/Storm. As a Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Gettman most recently served as an U.S. Air Force reserve officer attached to the 45th Space Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, until his retirement. Dr. Gettman has held academic positions at the University of New Mexico, Nova Southeastern University, and Palm Beach Atlantic University. He has made over one hundred presentations to professional groups at the local, state, national, and international levels.
He has authored numerous publications and is the first author on a new textbook published by CRC Press entitled "PharmacoEthics: A Problem Based Approach," and a chapter contributor to a new textbook published by McGraw-Hill entitled "Pharmacy Management: Essentials for All Practice Settings." He has belonged to over twenty professional associations including Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International, the American Pharmacists Association, and the Association of American Colleges of Pharmacy, for which he recently served as Chair of the Ethics Special Interest Group.
Dr. Gettman has taught numerous pharmacy administration courses, including but not limited to pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics and outcomes assessment, pharmacoethics, pharmacy law, and planning, marketing, and compensation for pharmaceutical health care services. He has also provided elective clinical rotations for PharmD. Candidates that have focused on innovative research. He and his wife Mary Ann have a son named Paul James, and they have all been very involved in several community organizations.
