Charles BreeseDr. Charles Breese was raised in the Research Triangle Park area in Durham, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1984. He attended graduate school at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, and completed his Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology and Physiology in 1992, where he examined the effect of fetal alcohol exposure on endocrine regulation. He then joined the Alcohol Research Center at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) in Denver as a postdoctoral fellow in Pharmacology, and later as a member of the research faculty in the Department of Psychiatry as a member of the Schizophrenia Research Center. In these positions, he studied the regulation of the neuronal nicotinic and glutamatergic receptors in postmortem brain of alcoholics, smokers and schizophrenic subjects. Charles then joined the faculty at Auburn University School of Pharmacy, in the Department of Pharmacal Sciences in the Fall 1998.

While at Auburn, he was actively involved in pharmacy and graduate education, as well as studying the long-term consequences of fetal drug exposure. His current research interest continues to be the molecular neurobiological, endocrine, and long-term behavioral consequences of fetal drug exposure, as well as the regulation of the glutamatergic and neuronal nicotinic receptors in psychiatric disorders. Dr. Breese joined the faculty at the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy in the Fall of 2006 as Associate Dean for Academic and Curricular Affairs, and Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Pharmaceutical, Social, and Administrative Sciences.

He has published numerous scientific articles, book chapters, and conference abstracts, and has received over $1.5 million in total grant support during his career. He and his wife Ellen have 2 children, Amanda and Wesley.
